Blaze in the Storm

T an unusual family has arrived in town Straight from the circus the horse crazy Clements family are unlike any Bonnie has ever known What is it. Jenny Glazebrook s books remind me of what it s like to be a young Christian and a teenager Jenny does a great job of capturing the teenageryoung adult world with stories that draw you in Her characters are believable and the settings realistic Blaze in the Storm is the first in a series of six which introduces the Clement family Six new children at school is bound to cause a stir especially with their circus background and their excessive love of horses Bonnie is drawn to the eldest Blaze but his overly Christian stance is off putting as he has yet to learn how to express his faith with grace and gentleness Jenny is also unafraid of putting her characters in difficult situations which causes them to uestion their faith Some of these difficulties are life threatening others are the disillusionment with other Christians but all are part of the Christian life Jenny also understands how God works healing into a person s life which may take years to bear fruitThis is a great novel for young adults as there is so much for them to identify with from school yard name callers to high achievers to those who are simply bored and enjoy disrupting the classroom A great read

Why would a girl who has everything going for her need God Bonnie Blake's life is complete She is athletic intelligent popular and attractive Bu. Vivacious Bonnie Blake has the world at her feet she s bright enough to pass her school tests with excellent results and minimal effort spending half of most lessons outside the classroom in the corridor for misbehaviour She s a superb athlete a stunning debater and she d win every popularity contest hands downBut then the Clements family arrive at her school and she finds herself drawn to a troupe of horse mad kids who used to perform in a circus Blaze Clements is dirty pimply socially awkward and on a mission to evangelise anyone who ll sit still long enough to listen His brothers and sisters are wild and carefree in contrast to Blaze s uiet intensity In no time at all Blaze s earnest Christian faith has driven a wedge between himself and Bonnie The either of them try to bridge the growing chasm between them the wider it gets A crisis comes when the stables where the Clements keep their horses is set alight and Bonnie suffers third degree burns saving one of the animals Broken physically emotionally and spiritually Bonnie finds she needs to get away to the city to recover Well over a year passes before she is ready to face a school routine again Despite new friendships and a budding romance it is the long disappeared Blaze Clements who continues to haunt her thoughtsA sweet romance with a strong Christian message and surprisingly a few genuinely obnoxious Christian characters It was good to see realism poking through and that not everyone in the Christian camp had their halo buffed upTargeted mainly in my view to a YA Christian homeschooling audience

I read the first 3 books of this series one after another in order to assess whether they might be suitable for my nephews and nieces Loved the range of teenage issues One thing I would love although these are Australian stories there was almost no description of Australia I don't remember a mention of anything but horses Recommended for teens
