Stories The Ants of Flanders by Robert Reed Bronsky's Dates with Death by Peter David The Witch of Corinth by Steven Saylor The Ramshead Algorithm by KJ Kabza The Way it Works Out and All by Peter S Beagle Less Stately Mansions by Rob Chilson Hair b Another average to good issue in which I enjoyed most of the stories though none were stand out amazing and a couple were unmemorable A noticeable lack of female characters too perhaps because few female writers were in this issueBronsky s Date with Death by Peter David The first non Star Trek story I ve read by Peter David David is well known for his media tie in novels I m not familiar with novels of his own creation however This story like his Star Trek books is well written entertaining and humorous An elderly man who likes to talk and obsess over his inevitable death finds that Death is performance shyThe Way it Works Out and All by Peter S Beagle A fictional timedimension travel story based around the real life character of Avram Davidson an eccentric former editor of FSF Feel like I would appreciate this if I had known about DavidsonLess Stately Mansions by Rob Chilson A SF story featuring Hydrosol Intrasensitive Land Engineering technology first patented and discussed in the late 1950 s to late 1960 s An aging farmer fights his descendents from taking his farm encompassing most of Missouri from him to sell off as they leave Earth for colonies The story does a good job focusing both on the science and complex family dynamics conflicting emotionsThe Ants of Flanders by Robert Reed A novella split into five adventures about a uniue young man who is caught in the center of an alien invasion where Earth is the battleground for advanced aliens who barely register humans as worth considering perhaps A good Reed story but this could have been better as a full novel I thinkA Short History of the ETEWAF Revolution by Paul Di Filippo A little piece of post modernism in the vein of The Society of the Spectacle recounting the history of a consumer revolutionHair by Joan Aiken A short gothic story about a man who visits the odd childhood home and mother of his recently deceased new wife a woman who he had even only recently met Great atmosphereThe Witch of Corinth by Steven Saylor I wouldn t consider this story fantasy at all but a historical mystery set in Roman times with Greek Roman characters that could ve easily been in Ellery ueen or Hitchcock s magazine Nonethless a good mystery short story with a witchcraft veinSir Morgravain Speaks of Night Dragons and Other Things by Richard Bowes Utterly forgettable for me I know little of the Arthur legends so the characters and take on this was lost on me Someone Like You by Michael Alexander Another timedimension travel type story this time told non linearly and involving murder and some family dysfunction Wasn t memorable to me The Ramshead Algorithm by KJ Kabza The story this issue that I enjoyed the most and also the one that took the most concentration to appreciate particularly at the start Like the previous a twisty tale about reality and relations as FSF introduced it reuiring that you dive headfirst into it Don t worry about coming up for air It ll happen when it happens Indeed A begrudgingly affluent young man with an overbearing father travels through a secret portal in the family compound s backyard to an interdimensional hyper reality type plane where he works to service maintain and hold secure the worlds A situation arises that he must fix but his family stands in the way Predictable ending was the only downside to this onePattern Recognition Randomness and Roshambo by Paul Doherty Pat Murphy Nonfiction on probability and work towards robots or computational devices that are truly random and programs that are capable of picking out patterns The usual good review by this science writing team
